Al-Andalus
If you’re walking down Little Clarendon Street in Oxford and craving a taste of Spain, Al-Andalus is impossible to miss. Nestled at 10 Little Clarendon St, Oxford OX1 2HP, this lively Spanish restaurant brings an authentic, flavor-rich experience straight from the Iberian Peninsula. Whether you're a local foodie, a curious traveler, or simply someone hunting down the best tapas in Oxford, Al-Andalus has likely popped up on your radar-and for good reason.
At the heart of Al-Andalus is its vibrant tapas culture, offering a menu that feels like a culinary tour across Spain. One minute you're indulging in Gambas al Ajillo-juicy prawns sizzled in garlicky olive oil-and the next, you’re savoring Pulpo a la Gallega, tender octopus seasoned simply with paprika and salt. Dishes like Pimientos de Padrón, Dates Wrapped in Bacon, and Patatas Bravas with Olives elevate the sharing table with their bold, rustic charm. If you’ve been searching for “authentic Spanish tapas Oxford” or “best tapas near me,” this spot deserves your bookmark.
A meal here isn't complete without pairing your food with something to drink. Whether you lean toward a classic Sangria, a glass of Spanish wine, or want to explore something stronger like Spanish spirits, Al-Andalus doesn’t hold back. Cocktail lovers can try the Manhattan, while non-drinkers are equally cared for with fresh juices and coffee. The restaurant also serves beer and features a selection of healthy options and late-night food, making it a versatile destination.
Al-Andalus goes beyond small plates with offerings like Seafood Paella, Arròs Negre (black rice paella), and Pollo y Chorizo con Patatas, each dish carrying the depth and warmth of traditional Spanish home cooking. Meat lovers should try Brochetas de Ternera y Dátiles (beef and date skewers), and if you're a fan of cheesy delights, Montaditos de Lomo y Queso and Mozzarella Sticks add a comforting twist to the table. For dessert, the Lava Cake is a crowd-pleaser that finishes the experience on a rich, indulgent note.
Step inside, and you’re immediately greeted with an atmosphere that’s warm, slightly rustic, and effortlessly festive. The live performances-think flamenco guitar or traditional Spanish vocals-transform dinner into an experience. It’s one of the few restaurants in Oxford where you can dine-in, enjoy outdoor seating on warmer evenings, and even get up and dance if the mood strikes. Though there’s no delivery, they do offer takeaway, which is great if you're looking to enjoy Spanish food from the comfort of your home.
One of the standout qualities of Al-Andalus is how flexible it is. It’s a great choice for lunch, dinner, or dessert runs, and the seating layout makes it suitable for everything from romantic dinners to group celebrations. Whether you're there for a quick bite or planning to settle in for the evening, the rhythm of the restaurant flows at your pace.
While there is no wheelchair-accessible car park, the restaurant itself is central and walkable for most visitors in Oxford’s city center. It’s perfect if you’re coming by foot or public transport, and it remains a popular spot for locals and tourists alike.
Whether you're out for a late-night bite, looking for a romantic dinner spot, or just exploring Spanish restaurants in Oxford, Al-Andalus delivers an experience full of bold flavors, good vibes, and memorable moments.
Reviews
This restaurant was fantastic, they fitted 10 of us in at the last minute. The food was really good, service was excellent they could not do enough for us and it was nice to see people talking to one another rather than sat on their phones. I am not local but would happily drive back just to come here.
Very tasty Spanish food!!! Best restaurant in Oxford. Must try their Patata bravas, Selección de croquetas de la casa and black rice paella. This is now my favourite place to have lunch/dinner with friends. Always had a good time with really good food!!
We found the service to be friendly, attentive and not intrusive. Relaxed atmosphere. The food was delicious - the different dishes were very tasty and varied. Will return again next time we are in Oxford.
A fabulous place to eat if you like tapas. Cosy, friendly and great food. Worth noting that the portions are very generous for tapas...more like 'little plates'. We ordered three each for the two of us. Next time we would have two each!
Highly recommend that you preorder your paella. When we arrived the paella was done just in time and was immediately served after we ordered our drinks. Perfect! The one we had is a mixta of 2 people portion, which more than enough for 3-4 people. We ordered 4 tapas. The most memorable one was the bacon wrapped date skewers with beef chunks, but the beef was grilled to medium well so it was quite tough. Service is fantastic, the hosts were friendly, inviting and most humbly professional. We felt most welcome. There is public side parking in front of the restaurant, payable at 8.30am-6.30pm.
